How to choose a UST projector cabinet for your living room
What to look for in a UST projector cabinet, from screen concealment and system compatibility to furniture design and a complete turnkey solution.

At Vanish, we design furniture that conceals complete entertainment systems: projector, rising screen, sound, controls and power. Bringing those elements together has taught us that choosing a UST projector cabinet is as much a furniture decision as a technology decision.
Ultra short throw (UST) projectors make large-scale projection possible without a ceiling-mounted projector across the room. But the projector alone doesn’t resolve the screen, the speakers, the wiring or how everything will look when it’s switched off.
Vanish addresses that as a turnkey solution. If you’re exploring your options, here are the distinctions worth understanding before you choose.
What does the cabinet actually conceal?
“UST projector cabinet” describes a wide range of products. Some provide a surface or compartment for the projector. Others incorporate a moving platform, storage for electronics or a retractable screen. Similar-looking cabinets can solve very different parts of the problem.
Check what is integrated, what remains visible and what you’ll need to source separately. A cabinet that hides the projector but requires a permanent wall screen still dedicates a substantial part of the room to entertainment.
We design Vanish around a screen that retracts into the furniture. That allows artwork or a window to occupy the space behind it. While you’re watching, the screen takes its place in the room. Afterward, the art or view returns. That ability to share the same space is a fundamental advantage of a concealed system.

Compatibility is more than cabinet width
A UST projector’s position relative to its screen determines where the image lands. The required distance and height vary by projector and image size, so a cabinet described as suitable for UST projection won’t necessarily accommodate every combination.
The furniture must account for that geometry, keep the projection path clear, allow ventilation and provide access to connections. Sound, controls and power need to be considered at the same time, rather than fitted into whatever space remains.
This is part of the work Vanish handles within the complete system. If you’re assembling components separately, confirm the exact projector, screen and cabinet combination before ordering. Physical fit is only the beginning.
Choose furniture that belongs in the room
The system needs to work when it’s open. The furniture needs to work all the time.
A credenza, console table, dresser, bench or window seat offers a different way to incorporate entertainment into a room. Vanish uses these furniture formats because each serves a different layout and purpose. The choice should follow the space, the seating arrangement and how you live in it.
Consider the dimensions of the furniture alongside the raised screen position. A large image is only enjoyable if it’s comfortable to watch from your usual seat. Daylight and lighting also deserve attention when specifying the projection system.
Then consider the closed piece: its proportions, materials, finish and relationship to the surrounding furniture. Concealment works best when you would want the piece in your home even without the entertainment inside it.

Know what a complete system includes
An attractive cabinet can still leave you or your installer with a substantial project. Before comparing options, establish what each proposal includes.
Is it furniture alone, or does it include the projector, screen, sound and controls? How does the system start up? Does anything require manual adjustment? How will equipment be accessed later? What delivery and setup arrangements are included?
These questions define the scope and help you compare like with like.
With Vanish, the furniture and entertainment system are developed together. Our team works with you to establish the configuration and confirm the scope for your space. You’re choosing a coordinated, turnkey solution, with the integration considered from the outset.
A big screen without a permanent takeover
The appeal of a concealed projection system goes beyond hiding electronics. It lets a room accommodate spectacular entertainment without being arranged around it every hour of the day.
That’s what we build at Vanish: furniture that belongs in your home, with a complete entertainment system ready when you want it.
